Gearing Up!

There is lots of activity in the garden! A propagation workshop for volunteers, making and filling a "hotbox" with manure, moving a delivery of compost into the green house, moving plants from the green house to cold frames, clearing brambles, cleaning the sensory board on the nature trail, sowing tomato, broad beans, spinach, peas and carrot seeds and potting on flowers and herbs!!

Spring Quote

At last the weather today looks like we can expect Spring to arrive at any time, certainly after the terrible storms that have hit the UK recently I was beginning to doubt we would ever get a Spring. But there are some very positive signs showing in the gardens now as you can see from the photos below, so I thought today would be appropriate to put up my Spring Quote - hope you like it.

'Tis like the birthday of the world,
When earth was born in bloom;
The light is made of many dyes,
The air is all perfume:
There's crimson buds, and white and blue,
The very rainbow showers
Have turned to blossoms where they fell,
And sown the earth with flowers.

Starting our Incredible Edible work!

We are looking to increase the areas at Ford Park that we use to grow food in the spirit of Incredible Edibles! Our head gardener Sarah and many volunteers started work today to create a mixed flower and vegetable bed in the grounds (ie not in the kitchen garden) which will include some decorative bean tepees. They also used planters made by our woodwork group and wall pots to plant up Borage, Poppies and Strawberries! If you want to find out more about Incredible Edible Ulverston please check out the following web sites or come to the public meeting at the Town Hall on February 26th at 6pm.

Feeding the soil!

A good time of year to get our volunteers involved in moving manure delivered by a local farmer into the compost bay to mature for a while before we use it. We have also been turning compost again and digging in green manure.

Pottery in the Kitchen Garden

Enjoy our arrangements of pottery lanterns among the beds of salads and vegetables! This work has been created and provided by Ulverston's Gill Bank Community Group. A show will be put on for those attending the Fire and Ice Theme Nights in the Coach house on the 21st and 22nd February when some of the lanterns will be lit! (ring 01229 581666 to book)
